The 144,000. Who are they?

Isaiah 54:5 “For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.”

  1. The 144,000 will be highly dedicated and loyal to the service of God.
  2.  The 144,000 will sing a song of experience and victory that others cannot sing.
  3. The 144,000 will be empowered by the Two Witnesses for a limited time – 1,260 days.
  4. The 144,000 will accomplish in this short amount of time what denominations have failed to do during the past 2,000 years.
  5. The prophets of the Antichrist will greatly outnumber the 144,000.

End-time Perspective

The 144,000 will accomplish, through the enabling power of God, something that mere men and women cannot do. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the 144,000 will proclaim the everlasting gospel to every living person on Earth in less than 1,260 days! The result will be an international harvest of people that will be numberless. Consider for a moment the significance of preaching the everlasting gospel. What is the everlasting gospel?

The everlasting gospel is the truth about God and the terms and conditions of His salvation. The 144,000 will proclaim THE TRUTH and this truth will expose the false teachings of every religious system on Earth! This is an amazing point: God will not use an existing denomination as a vehicle to proclaim the everlasting gospel during the end-time. If this startles you, consider this point: The book of Revelation does not identify a “true denomination” at the end of time. Instead, Revelation identifies a “true gospel” and identifies the people who cling to it as “the remnant of the woman.” (Rev 12:17; 14:12)

Most people will agree that God does not save people because of a church affiliation. Salvation is not gained through membership in an Earthly organization. In fact, if God used a religious organization to proclaim the everlasting gospel during the end-time, church affiliation would be an insurmountable problem for many people. Prejudice is a human frailty. Some people would rather die and go to hell than to join another church or even worse, the church of someone who has offended them. Consider the following example: Let us suppose that God looks down on Earth and decides to use a particular sect within the Moslem faith to give the truth for the end-time. How many Catholics, Jews or Christians do you think would join “that church” to be saved? Now turn the table around and ask yourself how many Catholics, Jews, Protestants or Moslems would join your particular church to be saved?

God knows that Earthly religion has more to do with social structure than with a personal love for TRUTH. (Statistics show that 95% of people remain loyal to the religious system into which they were born and raised in – even if they fail to practice their religion.) Since properties of religion are so influential within the human race, God must test humankind. Because social relationships can be more important than loving truth, God must test people. A significant distinction exists between serving God and serving the church, and God must test humankind to see if we love Him and His truth above everything else. The test will be simple and applied without partiality. God will require everyone to leave his or her church for the sake of truth! Only then will the object of our deepest affection be revealed. At that time, some people will discover they loved their church more than they loved God! What a sad thought! Only when a contest exists between God and a person’s church can humans detect the distinction that exists between serving God and serving the church. Until this test is applied, most people cannot understand this distinction or problem. Remember, in Jesus’ day, the Pharisees could not discern how they were as blind as Jesus claimed! However, the day is coming when the same test given the Jewish nation will be applied to everyone, and each of us will be forced to make a choice: Keep the commandments of – God or religion. Unfortunately, many people cannot separate themselves from their church of birth, even when presented with the plainest truth.

“Were it not for Christ’s atoning sacrifice, there would be nothing in us in which God could delight. All the natural goodness of man is worthless in God’s sight. He does not take pleasure in any man who retains his old nature, and is not so renewed in knowledge and grace that he is a new man in Christ. Our education, our talents, our means, are gifts entrusted to us by God, that he may test us. If we use them for self-glorification, God says, “I cannot delight in them; for Christ has died for them in vain.” RH August 24, 1897, par. 3

Ezekiel 16:8
“‘Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your naked body (naked means without God). I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign LORD, and you became mine.

“In that day,” declares the LORD, “you will call me ‘my husband‘; you will no longer call me ‘my master.’

The Spirit and the Bride = the bride is the 144,000 who have been chosen from among the common people to be leaders since 1844 to the Sunday law. God chose 12 apostle leaders from among the common people. God chooses (144,000 end time leaders) His Bride from among the common people from 1844 and on until the Sunday law goes forth. Those who believe in the 3 angels and the 7th day Sabbath messages and help to give these warning messages who die in the faith will be raised in a special/limited resurrection (Daniel 12:2 and Revelation 1:7) when God gives the covenant of peace and the time of the 7th plague/Christ’s 2nd advent.’

Smith concludes that those who are resurrected during this special resurrection are “some of the pre-eminently wicked, and some of the pre-eminently good” and includes “all those who have died in the third angel’s message.

In answering the question as to the identity of the 144,000, Smith argues that it cannot be those who never died, because of their redemption from not only the earth, but also from amongst humanity. Answering the reader’s inquiry as to how this could be possible, the reply “that they come up in the special resurrection, embracing a limited number of both righteous and wicked, as mentioned in Dan.12:2 and Rev.1:7. Those who, in this resurrection, come up to everlasting life (though notthen made immortal) are those who belong to the 144,000 because they have died in themessage.”
Smith also goes on to further refine Ellen White’s view of “those who pierced Him”
“The Weekly – Our Work” by Joshua V. Himes in the March 15, 1842 edition of the Signs of the Times, where he writes “Then let all cry aloud and spare not, that the crucified Lord is about returning in glory to take vengeance upon his enemies: not only upon those who pierced his sacred body with nails and with spears at Jerusalem, but those also that pierce him every day by their sins and iniquities, their hard speeches, concerning his person, his religion, and his coming.”
the two texts are merged together to provide a unified thought on a special resurrection that consists of a limited class of individuals at just prior to the Second Coming of Christ. It is important to stop and look 10 Joshua V. Himes, “The End of the Prophetic Periods,” Signs of the Times, April 5, 1843.11Joshua V. Himes and Josiah Litch, eds., Millennial Musings: A Choice Selection of Hymns: Designed for the Use of Second Advent Meetings (Boston, MA: [s.n], 1842).
6at the argument that Smith provides for this special event, because although Ellen White had already commented on it, Smith provides something she had not, a solid biblical view of the texts in question and supporting texts related to the topic. In his explanation on Daniel 12:2, Smith plainly asks if the text is referring to the general resurrection, “
or is there to intervene between Christ’s reception of the kingdom and his revelation to earth in all his advent glory (Luke 19:12) a special resurrection answering to the description here given?”
In turning to Revelation 1:7, he clearly identifies those who see Him that pierced Him as being those “who were chiefly concerned in the tragedy of his death” for “they shall behold him returning to earth in triumph and glory.”
Smithin turning to an explanation of Revelation 20:5, explains that the wicked are resurrected only after the millennium, so what is presented in Daniel and Revelation is a special resurrection. His words sum up the special resurrection thought best:Here a partial resurrection is brought to view, or a resurrection of a certain class of each, righteous and wicked, before the general resurrection of either class. Many, not all, that sleep shall awake. Some of the righteous, not all of them, to everlasting life, and some of the wicked, not all of them, to shame and everlasting contempt. And this resurrection transpires in connection with the great time of trouble such as never was, which just precedes the coming of the Lord. May not “they also which pierced him,” be among those who then come up to shame and everlasting contempt? What could be more appropriate,so far as human minds can judge, than that those who took part in the scene of our Lord’s greatest humiliation and other special leaders in crime against him, should be raised to behold his terrible majesty, as he comes forth triumphantly, in flaming fire, to take vengeance on them that know not God, and obey not his gospel?14 (Emphasis by Uriah Smith) Finally Smith identifies when this event will take place. Following the biblical context that Ellen White uses for placing it during the seventh plague, Uriah Smith utilizes Revelation 16:17; 22:11 and Joel 3:16.
the ideas are merged together of Daniel 12:2 and Revelation 1:7. As is seen, the textual references, as opposed to

Spiritual Gifts, are now included:Graves are opened, and “many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth” “awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” [Daniel 12:2.] All who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God’s covenant of peace with those who have kept his law. “They also which pierced Him,” [Revelation 1:7.] those that mocked and derided Christ’s dying agonies, and the most violent opposers of his truth and his people, are raised to behold him in his glory, and to see the honor placed upon the loyal and obedient.”

Ezekiel 34:25 “And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.” This happens at the start of the plagues, when Christ stands up and says IT IS FINISHED and the 144,000 have to live in the sight of a Holy God without a mediator.

“graves were opened, and those who had died in faith under the third angel’s message, keeping the Sabbath, came forth from their dusty beds, glorified, to hear the covenant of peace that God was to make with those who had kept His law.” Ellen G. “By his obedience to all the commandments of God, Christ wrought out a redemption for man. This was not done by going out of himself to another, but by taking humanity into himself. Thus Christ gave to humanity an existence out of himself. To bring humanity into Christ, to bring the fallen race into oneness with divinity, is the work of redemption. Christ took human nature that men might be one with him as he is one with the Father, that God may love man as he loves his only begotten Son, that men may be partakers of the divine nature, and be complete in him. The Holy Spirit, which proceeds from the only begotten Son of God, binds the human agent, body, soul, and spirit, to the perfect, divine-human nature of Christ. This union is represented by the union of the vine and the branches. Finite man is united to the manhood of Christ. Through faith human nature is assimilated with Christ’s nature. We are made one with God in Christ.” –{THE REVIEW AND HERALD, April 5, 1906}
